.H1N1: confusion over diagnosis

HYDERABAD: Confusion over diagnosis of a suspected H1N1 patient at Erragadda Government Chest Hospital on Saturday threatened to spiral into chaos when Majlis Bachao Tehreek (MBT) leader Amjadullah Khan and his supporters insisted that doctors collect samples from the patient and test for swine flu.

The Chest Hospital doctors asserted that the patient, two-year-old Areena Khan and daughter of Amjadullah Khan, is a Category ‘B’ patient and there is no need to collect samples. The Chest Hospital doctors tried to drive home this point while Mr. Khan and his followers insisted that they collect samples.

Areena was earlier treated for a day at Hope Hospital in old city and had 98 degrees of temperature. “There was no need to take samples of Areena.

As a precaution, however, we gave her Tamiflu syrup and asked Mr. Khan to come back after 24 hours for follow up,” State coordinator for swine flu Dr. K. Subhakar said.

With Amjadullah Khan insisting that Arreena be admitted, the hospital doctors asked them to take her to Gandhi Hospital, as the hospital does not have a dedicated paediatric wing. “They did not collect samples in any hospital. In the end, the doctors of Gandhi hospital attended to her,” Mr. Khan said.
