OU JAC take oath, No violence, suicides

In a move that may give some breather to the State Government and the police, the Osmania University Students’ Joint Action Committee on Monday decided not to take out violent protests and got all its members to take a pledge against committing suicide.

The JAC members took a decision to this effect at a meeting on the Osmania University campus.

‘‘In the wake of student suicides, we have made the members take an oath that they will not commit suicide at any cost. All the members had in fact passed a resolution against suicide attempts on Sunday itself,’’ member of the OU JAC Anil Kumar said. He, however, said, ‘‘the JAC will not hesitate to give a bandh call if the need for the same arises.’’ The JAC members also agreed to extend their support to the Singareni Collieries employees who are also staging protests for the Telangana cause. ‘‘We will continue to extend our support to such initiatives in the future also and make it a point to ensure that the movement doesn’t take a violent turn,’’ another JAC member said.

As part of their protest held on the campus here on Monday, the JAC members burnt senior Congress MLA and former minister JC Diwakar Reddy in effigy for his statements on Yadaiah, the 21-year-old who immolated himself on Saturday.

The students said it was not proper on the part of the senior leader to make such irresponsible statements. Diwakar Reddy had referred to Yadaiah’s stint in a local restuarant and insinuated that such a man should not be equated with students.

Condemning the lathi charge against the Telangana lawyers at the Parliament, the members also raised slogans against the Union Government.
