As many as 20 people are feared dead after tonnes of granite tumbled on them while they were working in a 250-feet deep quarry at Chimakurti on Thursday night.
Police rescued two workers, Srinivas Rao and Venkat Rao, and have pulled out three dead persons including M. Pitchaiah. Rescue workers are pessimistic about the chances of the others coming out alive, as stones have piled up to a height of 70 feet in the bottom of the quarry. Experts said the rocks could not be shifted out using earth movers.
Sources said those who were working in the second shift had blasted the rock in the bottom of the quarry following which the rocks on the sides collapsed.
Police arrested the quarry general manager of Hamsa Mineral Granite, Mr N. Chandrasekhar Reddy, and quarry safety manager, Mr A. Balakrishna Reddy.
