MUMBAI: The body of a nine-year-old girl who was raped before being murdered was found on the terrace of building no 109 at the police quarters in Kurla (E) on Sunday morning. Six persons from the locality have been detained for questioning.
“The autopsy report confirms that the girl was raped before she was killed,” said additional commissioner of police (East) Ritesh Kumar.
“The building is hardly 10 metres from the Nehru Nagar police station and senior inspector Prakash Kale stays there,’’ an officer said.
This is the second incident of rape and murder of a minor girl in Kurla (East) in a month. The police suspect that both the crimes were committed by the same person/s. A team of five officers has been formed to detect both the crimes.
The body was discovered around 9.30 on Sunday morning, when the son of a sub-inspector staying in the building went up to the terrace. “The boy had gone up to the terrace to dry a mattress when he suddenly saw the body of a girl dumped near the water tank. He rushed downstairs and informed the policemen about the incident and also called us up,’’ said an officer from the Nehru Nagar police station.
Incidentally, around 1 am on Sunday, a resident of a slum near Kurla railway station had lodged a missing person’s complaint about his minor daughter.
Putting two and two together, the police went to the slum and called the complainant, Ramesh Jaiswal, to the police station. Ramesh identified the body as that of his daughter. “My daughter had gone out late in the evening to play with her friends in the neighbourhood. When she did not return till late at night, we started looking for her everywhere and finally, around 1 am, lodged a missing person’s complaint,’’ said Ramesh, who sells popcorn.
An officer from the Nehru Nagar police station said, “The accused must have dumped the child’s body on the terrace of the police quarters thinking that no one would look for the victim there.’’
Sawant said the body has been sent to Rajawadi Hospital for post-mortem. “No one from the police quarters was aware of anyone going to the terrace at night,’’ he said.
Sawant added that they were going to question the victim’s friend—with whom she was playing—to get the description of the person who took the girl away.
Past Horror: A six-year-old minor girl went missing on the night of February 9 when she went out to play with her friends at Vatsalyatai Nagar in Kurla (E). The next day, her body was found in a gunny bag dumped on the staircase leading to the terrace of a seven-storied building at Sri Sai Shradha Cooperative Housing Society in Kurla (East) near her home. A test revealed that she had been raped before murdered. Zonal DCP Dilip Sawant said they had questioned more than 50 people and detained three youths. “DNA samples of the three have been sent to the forensic science laboratory at Kalina to nail the accused,’’ Sawant said.
