Philippines brace for possible volcano eruption
Lava cascades down the slopes of Mayon volcano on Dec. 15. State volcanologists raised the alert level on the volcano to two steps below a major eruption after ash explosions and orange lava fragments began trickling down the side overnight. Albay provincial Gov. Joey Salceda ordered the Joint Task Force Mayon to begin evacuating some of the estimated 50,000 people who live near the volcano in case it erupts.
Lava flows from the crater of the cone-shaped, 8,070-foot Mayon volcano in Legazpi, Albay province, southeast of Manila on Dec. 15. Authorities began evacuating thousands of villagers who live near the Philippines’ most active volcano after it oozed lava and shot plumes of ash Tuesday.
