Charminar

The Charminar is a famous landmark of Hyderabad tourism. It was constructed by Mohd. Quli Qutub Shah in the year 1591 in order to mark the end of plague in the city. This symbolic monument has four dominating minarets each 54 meters high. They are adorned with carved lotus buds and petals. There is also a mosque here. Charminar – the principal landmark of the city is among the wonders of India. It was built by the ruler Quli Qutab Shah in honour of his Hindu wife Bhagmati.

According to legends, this is the place where the king first saw his lover and was attracted by her beauty. The monument is surrounded by a very busy market place and is located in a prominent area of the old city.

This magnificent edifice has four huge minars or pillars, hence called Charminar. Built to a height of 56.7meters (186 feet) and on a square base of 31.5 meters (100 feet), Charminar is said to be a prototype of Tazia, a representation of the tomb of Imam Husain. The monument has the same importance as that of Statue of Liberty in USA and the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Charminar is one of the most famous buildings representing the historical remains of not only Hyderabad and Deccan region but the whole India.

Golconda Fort

The Golconda Fort was established by the Yadava dynasty of Deogiri and Kakatiyas of Warangal. This fort was named after the Telugu word “Golla Konda” which means “Shephard’s Hill”. It was earlier a mud fort and the Golconda received its present form by Qutub Shahi kings. Today, it stands with a massive structure of granite. The walls of this fort have eight gates and 87 bastions. They are spread over an area of 7 kms.

The fort is famous for its acoustic system, palaces and ingenious water supply system. It is said that the world famous diamond “Kohinoor” belongs to this fort. A major highlight of this fort is a sound and light show displayed in the evening. This show depicts the might of Qutub Shahi dynasty.

This fort, originally built by the Kakatiyas, the rulers of the neighboring state, was made with mud. Later, the Shahis Golconda Fort converted it into a marvelous piece of architecture using advanced acoustics wherein sound signals could pass from the entrance of the fort to the top without the use of any electric gadgets. There is a sound and light show in the evening which is quiet popular.

The grand fortress is protected by three formidable lines of defense. The first, an outer fortification made up of granite blocks. The middle wall surrounds the base of the hill and the innermost one follows the contours of the highest ridge. The fort was famous for its great hoard of diamonds, mined nearby. The Kohinoor diamond was a celebrated jewel of the fort, now a part of the British Crown Jewels.

Lad Bazaar

 

The Lad Bazaar at is famous tourist shopping hub for pearls, stone studded colored bangles and other bridal finery. Due to the thriving pearl industry, Hyderabad is also known as the ‘ City of Pearls’.

Lad is a word meaning ‘indulgence’. Indeed, there is no better place in the city for the lady to indulge herself.

 

 

The colorful Lad Bazaar lies on the right of Charminar, in the Old City. One of the oldest shopping centres in the city, the Lad Bazaar is an amazing mix of the ancient and the modern – an embodiment of Hyderabad. It’s shops offer an assortment of henna, bridal wear and cosmetics. But the real draw is the exquisite range of lac and glass bangles, the pride and joy of the women of Hyderabad.

This is a colorful bazaar located on one of the four main roads that branch out from the Charminar; it is located in a very old area of the city. The place offers bangles, tinsel, embroidery, brocade turbans for bride grooms, henna, herbal potions and everything else needed for a bride’s trousseau.

All stores present in the bazaar are well furnished with a clean and softly-padded floor. The customer sits down on the soft floor having removed his/her shoes, leans against a wall against a pillow and the employee presents different items on the floor.

NTR Gardens

Adjacent to Hussain Sagar Lake, is located the NTR Gardens named after the great political leader of Andhra Pradesh Late Shri N.T. Rama Rao.

 

 

 

 

NTR Gardens houses a memorial of the leader which is an example of modern architecture. The garden spreads over an area of 36 acres offering a very serene atmosphere and yet provides recreation facilities such as Machan Tree, Japanese Garden, Car Cafe, Souvenir Shops, Fruit Restaurant and Children’s playing area. It is also an amusement park for children.

Mahaveer Harina Vanasthali National Park is located in the outskirts of the city at Vanasthalipuram, just 16 km from Hyderabad. The park is named after the great Jain saint, Mahaveer Harina Vanasthali

Mahavir in commemoration of his 2500th birth anniversary in the year 1975. The area encompassed by the park once was the hunting paradise of the rulers of Hyderabad – the Nizam. Today, this park has become a living and dwelling place for thousands of wild animals including blackbucks (the state animal of Andhra Pradesh), porcupines, water monitors, short-toed eagles, Indian pond herons, egrets, kingfishers, cormorants and several other bird species.

 

There are rest sheds and observation towers for viewing the animals inside the park. Facilities for a van ride are also available inside the park to see the animals from close quarters on payment of a nominal fee. There is also an exhibition hall displaying intricate problems of wildlife conservation.

The king Chamaraja Wodeyar, during his visit to England had seen several structures of architectural importance but was greatly inspired by the Windsor Castle in London; hence he decided to build a palace in Tudor style.

 

The entire palace is spread over an area of about 430 acres; the Palace is famous for its elegantly carved woodwork. It is surrounded by a garden all around, almost giving it a fairytale setting. The structure has fortified towers decorated with Gothic windows, battlements and turrets. Thanks to the king for his endeavor in bringing such a beautiful palace.

Nawab Vikarul-Umra Bahadur, a baron of Paigah and the Prime Minister of Hyderabad. A huge amount of money was spent for the interior decoration, with tooled leather ceilings created by Florentine craftsman, furniture brought from France and marble imported from Italy.

 

The palace offers a panoramic view of the city and boasts a well laid garden in front of it. The imperial building is built in a classical style with a two-storeyed deep and colonnaded verandah carrying a pediment. The facade elements are notably European as the main palace was designed by English architects. The palace is now being converted into a luxurious hotel. The palace is just 4 km south of Charminar.

Sri Lakshminarasimha Swamy Temple or Yadagirigutta is a popular Hindu Temple of Narasimha Swamy, an incarnation Lord Vishnu It is situated on a hillock in the Nalgonda district, Andhra Pradesh, India., 60 kilometers from the city of Hyderabad. It has huge devotees visiting on Sundays and public holidays.
