India’s Longest Flyover Opened In Hyderabad

flyover

Access to Rajiv Gandhi International Airport at Shamshabad, about 30 km from the city, is set to become smoother and faster with India’s longest flyover being thrown open to traffic Monday.

The 11.633 km long PVNR Expressway, named after former Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao, connects the Mehdipatnam area in the city to the Hyderabad-Bangalore national highway (NH 7) en route to the international airport.

Built by Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) at a cost of Rs.4.39 billion, the 17.2-metre-wide four-lane elevated expressway starts at Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital at Mehdipatnam and lands at Aramghar Junction on NH 7 to join an underpass.

The airport-bound traffic will proceed further to get on to the trumpet interchange, providing faster access to the airport.

HMDA officials say the facility would cut the travel time to the airport by 30 to 40 minutes. Presently, it takes 45 minutes to one hour for a person to reach the airport from different points in the city.

The project, work on which was launched after the foundation stone was laid for the airport in 2005, has completed one-and-half year after the airport launched commercial operations.

The PVNR Expressway, which encompasses 327 spans, was delayed due to various reasons including financial constraints over the last one year.

It was last scheduled to be inaugurated on Oct 2 but was put off in view of the death of chief minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, who had laid the foundation stone for the project.

Chief Minister K. Rosaiah will inaugurate the Expressway Monday evening, fulfilling the long felt need of air passengers.

In a move aimed at ensuring fast and smooth traffic on Expressway, the Hyderabad and Cyberabad police have prohibited entry of two-wheelers, three-wheelers, all types of goods vehicles and slow-moving vehicles.

Since the down and up ramps are yet to be completed, the motorists will have to be careful while getting on to the Expressway as they will not be able to get down before covering the entire distance. However, median gaps have been provided at three points as a temporary measure for emergency U-turns.

Officials said a speed of 100 km per hour was envisaged on the Expressway but for light motor vehicles the speed limit will be 60 kmph. According to HMDA chief engineer Vivek Deshmukh, sound barriers were being installed at five points to reduce traffic noise pollution in residential and hospital zones.

The project was also mired in a naming controversy. Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM), the powerful Muslim political party in the city, and various other Muslim groups had opposed naming the Expressway after Narasimha Rao as they blame him for demolition of Babri Masjid at Ayodhya.

After the death of Rajasekhara Reddy in a helicopter crash Sep 2, these groups demanded that the project be named after the late chief minister. However, the state government ignored this demand

Repolling in Arunachal and Haryana today

Arunachal PradeshRepolling is in progress in 33 polling stations under 15 Assembly constituencies in Arunachal Pradesh, and in nine polling stations in Narnaund constituency in Haryana.

Out of the 33 polling stations, eight are in Upper Subansiri district, seven in Kurung Kumay district and five in Lower Subansiri district.

Repoll has been ordered in the wake of group clashes leading to damage of EVMs in some cases on the polling day on 13th October.

In Haryana also, repoll is on at nine polling stations in Narnaund constituency.

Over 75 percent polling was recorded in 57 Assembly constituencies on 13th October.

The three constituencies of Tawang district, with predominantly Buddhist population on the Sino-India border, however, did not go for polling as three Congress candidates had already been elected unopposed. The three included Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu.

Counting will be held on 22nd October.

In Haryana, the Election Commission has ordered repoll in nine polling stations in the Narnaund constituency where assembly elections were held on 13th October.

The decision for repoll was taken by the Commission on the basis of reports of Returning Officer and Observer of the concerned constituency.

Goa govt forms SIT to probe Margao blast

Goa blast Goa govt has formed a Special Investigating Team (SIT) to probe the Margao blast in which two members of a Hindu right-wing organisation, allegedly involved in the explosion, were killed.

Superintendent of Police Omprakash Kurtarkar will head the SIT, a senior police officer said on Sunday.

Two persons, owing allegiance to Sanatan Sanstha, linked to 2008 Malegaon blast accused Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur, were killed in the blast on Diwali eve.

Meanwhile, the Sanstha denied the allegations against it terming them as “baseless”.

Deputy Inspector General of Police Ravindra Yadav said no formal arrests has been made in the case and all the detained are being interrogated to get possible leads.

Leader of the Opposition Manohar Parrikar, quoting a senior police officer, told reporters on Sunday that explosive defused at Sancoale, 20 kms away from the blast site, was similar to that used in the blast at Thane in Mumbai.

A team of Goa Police on Sunday left for Sangli in neighbouring Maharashtra to get details about Melgunda Patil, who apparently ferried the explosives to Margao town and died in the blast. He hails from Sangli village.

“We are trying to get more leads through his background,” a senior police official said.

Sources within the Sanstha confirmed that Patil, a regular visitor to the Ashram, was staying in the premises for the last eight days.

Yogesh Naik, another person who died in the blast, is a milkman and was supplying milk to the Santhan’s ashram at Ramnathi.

NTPC enters into nuclear power gen

New Delhi: The thermal major, NTPC Ltd, has rolled up its sleeves to enter into the nuclear power generation. It has readied a core group of 30 people for the same. The group has begun their training in nuclear power technology.

NTPC which has already signed an initial Memorandum of Understanding with the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd to set up nuclear power projects through a joint venture is targeting 2,000 MW by 2017.

A company official said that “We are getting in place the training of a core team. This is being done in partnership with NPCIL, with the aim of gearing up to commence work on a project, as soon as it is assigned to use.”

Government officials said that the Center’s alternative strategy to tide over the paucity of funds and ramp up execution capability for new Light Water Reactor based projects hinges on roping in core-sector public sector undertakings and implementing projects through joint ventures with state owned Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd. The country’s installed nuclear power capacity is 4,120 MW.

Venkatraman Ramakrishnan will not accept an Indian job

Venkatraman Ramakrishnan has become a busy man after the Nobel Prizes were declared in the first week of October.

Venkatraman Ramakrishnan

He was questioned of getting a job in India, Venkatraman Ramakrishnan said that nobody has approached him to work in India. However, he said that if he got one he would refuse immediately. He is currently happy with the Laboratory of Molecular Biology which he considers an enjoyable place to work.

The 57-year-old Indian-American scientist clarifies that there are people who have never bothered to be in touch with him for decades and suddenly feel the urge to connect. He is tired of people from India bothering” him and clogging up his email box.

This year the Nobel laureate’s in Chemistry are Israeli Ada Yonath, American Thomas Steitz and Indian – American Venkatraman Ramakrishnan for producing atom-by-atom maps of the mysterious, life-giving ribosome that has allowed researchers to develop powerful new antibiotics.

Ramakrishnan used X-ray crystallography which is the same method used by the discoverers of DNA to map the thousands of microscopic atoms that make up a ribosome. Antibiotics based on Ramakrishnan’s model will save lives and decrease suffering. His work has been used to develop new antibiotics which kill germs by blocking their ribosome, while keeping the patient’s ribosome intact.

He refrained from the news stated that he went to school and pre-Science in Chidambaram, the Tamil Nadu temple town where he was born in 1952.

He was also annoyed at the way people he doesn’t know, for example a Mr Govindrajan, claims that they were his teachers at Annamalai University which he has never attended, since he left Chidambaram at the age of three.

The Committee of Physics gave one half of the prize to Charles Kao for developing the fibre-optic communication networks that carry voice, video and high-speed Internet data around the world, and the other half to Willard Boyle and George Smith for inventing the charged-couple device which led to the digital electronic eye of the camera, that revolutionized the way we handle photographs and medical images.

Commonwealth Games 2010 becoming a war more than a sport

Suresh Kalmadi, Head of the Organizing Committee of the Games in Delhi next year, had earlier asked for Mike Hooper, the Chief Executive Officer of the Commonwealth Games Federation to be sent back to UK.

Commonwealth Games 2010 becoming a war more than a sport

In the mean time, the Union Sports Minister, M. S. Gill said on Sunday, “All I know is the Prime Minister has given clear directions that every individual who is involved in the organizational task of the Games is only subordinate to the interests of India and the Games. I am confident we will deliver successful Games.”

The Sports Minister emphasized that the Union Government’s only concern was the successful conduct of the Games and towards achieving that task the Prime Minister had given clear mandates to him and the Group of Ministers, headed by the Urban Development Minister, Jaipal Reddy.

“It’s the understatement of the year that the games are behind schedule and that we have concerns regarding the preparations,” scathing criticism from Mike Hooper.

People with AB negative and O negative blood groups come together to donate blood

First time ever, a gathering of people belonging to the rare blood groups like AB negative and O negative was held in the city on Sunday. This was the first time people from different parts of the city, and walks of life, got together to thrash out issues related to rare blood donation.

People with AB negative and O negative blood groups come together to donate blood

The awareness camp, which was organised by the All-Kerala Blood Donors Society (KEBS) at University Adult Education Centre here, zeroed in on the need to increase the availability of such rare groups in case of an emergency.

As a first step towards the formation of the network, the camp collected the names, phone numbers and addresses of donors. The organisers plan to bring this out as a directory for easy reference.

“If you can bring the people of rare groups together, collect their details and circulate them among more people, then you will not have to run around in case of an emergency,’’ said K.M. Mohandas, the acting president of the society and one of the organisers of the camp.

Blood donation has become quite safe these days and the risk involved especially with regard to the use of needles can be ruled out.

Apart from this, the donors will have to undergo four mandatory tests to avoid Transfusion Transmitted Infectious (TTI) diseases.

Nuts, vegetable oils for a healthy heart

The American Heart Association says that it may be beneficial to include omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs)—found in vegetable oils, nuts and seeds—in diet plans charted for keeping the heart healthy

The new Science Advisory report suggests that consumers aim for at least five to ten per cent of energy (calories) from omega-6 PUFAs.

It further states that one can derive most benefit when omega-6 PUFAs replace saturated or trans fats in the diet.

The report adds that precise recommended daily servings will depend on physical activity level, age and gender, but range between 12 and 22 grams per day.

The AHA report also addresses the recent controversy that omega-6 fatty acids may actually increase inflammation and thereby increase rather than reduce cardiovascular risk.

The association insists that along with acids involved in the early stages of inflammation, anti-inflammatory molecules are also formed, and, thus, it is incorrect to view the omega-6 fatty acids as pro-inflammatory.

Upon reviewing epidemiological data, the research team behind the report observed that, in randomised controlled trials, those assigned to the higher omega-6 diets had less heart disease.

A meta-analysis of several trials indicated that replacing saturated fats with PUFA lowered risk for heart disease events by 24 per cent.

The report said that reducing omega-6 intakes would be more likely to increase than to decrease the risk of CHD.

While speaking on behalf of the European Society of Cardiology, Professor Heinz Drexel of the VIVIT Research Institute at Feldkirch said adds that the report not only recommended the consumption of at least 5-10 per cent of energy from omega-6 PUFAs, but also indicated that intakes higher than 10 per cent of energy appeared safe and might even be beneficial.

“(This statement) is somewhat discordant with earlier recommendations made by other authorities,” said Professor Drexel.

Professor Drexel further said: “This advisory is a resurrection of older recommendations on omega-6 PUFAs, in particular on linoleic acid. It is based on new ecological, case-control, prospective cohort and randomised controlled studies. Concerns raised in the past decade that omega-6 PUFAs may be pro-inflammatory are dispelled with evidence that omega-6 PUFAs have anti-inflammatory properties at the level of vascular endothelial cells. On balance, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.”

The expert added: “However, the effects of Omega-6 PUFAs appear weak and require long-term interventions. Many studies in the past were not long enough for a nutritional intervention. Moreover, in the intervention studies other nutrients were changed along with the enrichment of omega-6 PUFAs.”

28,000 soldiers are battling an estimated 10,000 hard-core Taliban in Pak

Islamabad: About 28,000 soldiers are battling an estimated 10,000 hard-core Taliban, including about 1,000 tough Uzbek fighters and some Arab al Qaeda members.

28,000 soldiers are battling an estimated 10,000 hard-core Taliban in Pak

Pakistani forces backed by heavy artillery attacked Taliban on Monday as the army moved to wrest control of militant strongholds in a lawless region on the Afghan border.

The offensive follows a string of brazen militant attacks in different parts of the country, including an assault on army headquarters, in which more than 150 people were killed.

“There has been artillery fire throughout the night. It was very heavy firing,” Noor Wali, a resident of Wana, the main town in the South Waziristan region, said by telephone.

The army said on Sunday that 60 militants and five soldiers had been killed in the first 24 hours of the long-awaited offensive launched on the militants in their South Waziristan bastion, which is a global Islamist hub.

IGNOU to educate and train BPL youths in six states

IGNOU will start a series of programmes early next year to educate and train youths from below poverty line families in tribal areas of six states.

After clearing the certificate or diploma courses, mostly on Information Technology, successful candidates will be given employment. While the certificate programmes are for six months each, the diploma courses will be for one year, IGNOU spokesman Surojit Mahalanobis said here.

The programmes will be conducted through a Common Service Centre (CSC) in each village panchayat of the six states – Orissa, MP, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal.

All programmes will be carried out online from application to certification stages. For this, the process is on for hiring services of trained teachers from nearby areas to teach and guide the IGNOU students in every village panchayat, he said.

The pass-out students will be employed in various industries in East Zone of India. Initially, the programmes will be run from a hired house until the construction of the Regional Institute for Vocational Education and Training for East Zone (RIVET-EZ), gets completed and handed over to IGNOU.

The RIVET-EZ is part of development programmes of IGNOU through education and training to the grassroots. For the North East states, a RIVET-type IGNOU Institute of Vocational Education and Training (IIVET) is already functioning at Shillong, Meghalaya. Four more RIVETS will be set up soon for other zones of the country.

How Jenson Button won the 2009 Formula One

It took six wins, one crash, 89 points and 16 races out of a total of 17 for Jenson Button to win the Formula One world title and become the 10th British driver to claim motor sport’s greatest prize.

When Button finished fifth in the Brazilian Grand Prix on Sunday, he bagged enough points to inherit the title from last year’s winner, Lewis Hamilton.

“It’s really amazing, especially after the last few races I’ve had,” Button told the BBC. “This one makes up for it. It was just such an awesome race and I’m world champion, baby.

“Twenty-one years ago I jumped in a car and I loved winning. I never expected to be world champion because you think racing drivers in Formula One are different to you but we’ve done it today.”

Button’s father, John, admitted the victory brought tears to his eyes. “I’m all washed out at the moment,” he told the BBC. “I’ve got to accept where he is now, he goes down in history with all the other great names. I haven’t got my head round that yet. We had a big squeeze and we were crying in there and he was crying on the radio in the car, which is not my son at all because he’s a hard man obviously.”

Button and his team, Brawn, have had an incredible championship, with near-total dominance early on giving way to a sequence of missed opportunities and, in Button’s case, a string of poor results.

But after seven seasons as a Formula One driver, 2009 proved to be the year the 29-year-old from Frome in Somerset did just enough to finally take the world title.

Tharoor wants more Indian politicians to use Twitter

In this file photo Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor travels economy, which he chose to call

PTI In this file photo Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor travels economy, which he chose to call “cattle class” in his tweets. Undeterred by the row created by his tweets, Tharoor has called more Indian politicians to take to Twitter.

In trouble recently for his “cattle class” tweets, Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor wants more Indian politicians to use the networking platform, but regrets the controversy surrounding him might have discouraged them.

Speaking on an online radio show here, Mr. Tharoor said Twitter was a useful way to get a peek inside the work-life of an elected leader, and said he would like to see more Indians tweeting.

“I would like to see more Indians using this very attractive interactive broadcast platform to get their thoughts out there,” said Mr. Tharoor, who currently has more than three lakh followers, the largest in the country.

The minister, who had recently courted trouble for referring to economy travellers as “cattle class,” on one of his tweets, however, admitted that the controversy might discourage his colleagues from trying out this handy tool.

“My only regret is that this whole unseemly controversy might dissuade a number of politicians who are otherwise curious or interested in emulating me from doing so because they fear they somehow maybe doing something that will get them into the kind of trouble that I got into,” he told the show hosted by eminent Indian-American scribe Sree Sreenivasan.

Mr. Tharoor said many of his followers had told him that Twitter was a useful way to get a peek inside the work-life of their elected leader and wanted other politicians use it.

“As the Internet gains ground more and more in India, I think those numbers will go up in India,” Tharoor said.

On the show, he candidly discussed the recent storm surrounding his tweets and the lessons he had drawn from it as a political beginner in India.

“One of the things I’ve learned being in Indian politics as a newcomer that it’s not enough for me to know what I know or be confident in what I intend to say… I have to constantly ask myself what might other people either wilfully or unwittingly choose to misunderstand,” said the former U.N. diplomat, who was in New York on an official visit.

“That does put a bit of a dampener on the freedom of expression but its necessary for a politician in a fishbowl, multilingual, pluralist democracy like India,” he added.

Keeping this experience in mind, the minister noted he would continue to use Twitter as a means to network with his constituents, and ensure that the correct meaning of his words was registered with the public.

Quoting Shakespeare he said: “The success of a jester lies not in the tongue of teller but the ear of the hearer.”
